As a matter of fact, there were more pleasant surprises in the following weeks. The procedure was quick. So was the recovery afterwards. I was able to return to work after only a day’s rest. And, with the exception of taking protective measures for the wound and constant eye drops in the first few weeks, it was quite troublesome free.
I have always enjoyed sports and out-door activities. Unfortunately, nearsightedness started to catch up on me early on when I was still in junior high. Since then, it has been bothering me all along! I couldn’t remember how many pairs of glasses I’ve lost on the basketball court, but I was pretty sure that my mom wasn’t too happy about it….Ha… As a result, I was very excited about contact lenses when they became available. Not only are they safer for sports, but also are better for vision. In many ways, it makes life a lot easier and more convenient. Unfortunately, its convenience doesn’t make up for its discomfort. I could hardly wear them long enough to get through the day because they would make my eyes dry, red and swollen, or even worse, inflamed from time to time. In addition, they are not always that convenient, as I can’t wear them in shower, or in bed, not to mention the inconvenient daily cleaning routine. Worse yet, they could sometimes be annoying as well. I am sure most people shared my experience of combing the floor for the lenses inadvertently dropped…. Ha…

Despite their good words, my initial feeling about the procedure was more curiosity than any serious thought. First of all, it’s a big decision with risks involved to make. Secondly, and probably more importantly at the time, it would have easily cost me more than USD 3,000 for both eyes to be done. For a kid straight out of school, it was more a luxury than necessity!
My first thought of getting my vision corrected with LASIK wasn’t until a few years later when I accompanied my friends to their successful surgeries. I sat with them in the pre-surgery consultation meetings and witnessed the surgeries afterwards. However, I didn’t make up my mind to go ahead with the procedure immediately, at least not until I did my homework and was fully aware of the risks faced. Going over the articles on FDA’s website gave me a thorough understanding of the things to consider and risks involved in undergoing a LASIK procedure. And the fact that most patients report pleasing results with their reflective surgeries provides me with the extra comfort to take my chance. Ha...
